Be aware of fruits and food with lofty sugar content.
Whole grains are appropriate since they have complex carbs that won't spike your blood sugars as much as fruits and candies.
Also, be aware of how carbs effect your blood sugar... which you'll see via your glucose trialling - pre and post meal.
Other than that there's nought obvious that comes to mind. You might want to look at the Ornish diet and the Pritikin diet, but relatives have a unyielding time staying on those diets since they are very restrictive.
