What are marshmallows made of??

i'm talking almost the non-tree sap ones. you know, the kinds flabby little kids love and are artificial? ya, what EXACTLY is in them? similar to, what kinds of starches and animal parts? my 'friends' won't shut up nearly the fact that i won't touch marshmallows a moment ago because of how synthetic they are, but i want to prove to them that they really are made of crap. thanks much! and i do plan on choosing a best answer..

Answers:
The grossest piece about marshmallows is most are made next to gelatin. And here is what gelatin is made out of:

Gelatin is made from by-products of the meat and leather industry, mainly pork skins, pork and cattle bones, or split cattle hide.

That is reason adequate to never touch them!! Good for you!
Here is a recipe by Ina Garten (food network chef)

1 recipe Homemade Marshmallow batter, recipe follows
Confectioners' sugar

Sprinkle partially the toasted coconut in an 8 by 12-inch nonmetal tub. Pour in the marshmallow batter and smooth the top of the mixture beside damp hand. Sprinkle on the remaining toasted coconut. Allow to dry uncovered at room temperature overnight.

Remove the marshmallows from the vessel and cut into squares. Roll the sides of each piece accommodatingly in confectioners' sugar. Store uncovered at room heat.

Homemade Marshmallows:
3 packages unflavored gelatin
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup light corn syrup
1/4 teaspoon kosher brackish
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
Confectioners' sugar, for dusting

Combine the gelatin and 1/2 cup of cold water within the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment and allow to sit while you cause the syrup.

Meanwhile, combine the sugar, corn syrup, salt, and 1/2 cup hose in a small saucepan and cook over environment heat until the sugar dissolves. Raise the boil to high and cook until the syrup reach 240 degrees F on a candy thermometer. Remove from the bake.

With the mixer on low speed, slowly pour the sugar syrup into the dissolved gelatin. Put the mixer on high speed and lash until the mixture is very glutinous, about 15 minutes. Add the vanilla and mix thoroughly.
Sugar or corn syrup, egg whites and gelatin - adjectives "natural" ingredients. If you're a vegan, you'd hold a problem with gelatin. It's made from animal collagen.
Many commercial marshmallows contain some or adjectives of the following:

artificial colour
artificial flavour
corn syrup
dextrose
gelatin
modified corn starch
natural flavour
sugar
tetrasodium pyrophosphate
hose down
hope that helps =)
Well, I try as much as possible to answer question from my own actual knowledge. However, I did not truly know the answer to this one and was curious nearly it myself, so I looked it up.

Apparently, there is nought really too horrible in them, except for the reality of how bad sugar and corn syrup are for you. The place I found said that cut of the definition is "a confection made from the root of the marshmallow or from corn syrup, sugar, albumen, and gelatin beaten to a flimsy spongy consistency" In case you don't know what albumen is, it is the protein from egg whites.

Anyhow, I will put a relationship here that shows where I get this info. Kind of interesting. Thanks for asking this, cuz I always considered necessary to know too!! (Feel free to give me best answer -- I love getting those -- but individual if I really do make the best answer!)

the personality that answered about it individual ok to eat marshmallows if you are a lacto-vegetarian has no theory what they are talking going on for.look up gelatin...it is a by product of animals, from boiling bones (it is what comes out of the bones when they are boiled), skin, tendons. I wouldn't call them synthetic, however if you don't want to put away anything from animals...don't eat marshmallow, jello, etc.
* Sugar or Corn Syrup
* Egg whites
* Gelatin - usually from animals bones or hide, Kosher gelatin is from fish

There are Vegan marshmallows -- ones that use real marshmallow extract from the marshmallow plant or use gelatin alternatives.
