A pod of potatoes ooze brown juice and I'm not sure what it is.?

Last year, my roommates left a shoulder bag of potatoes in a cupboard and eventually, at hand was this horrid odor contained by the kitchen. One morning, I wake up and discovered the shoulder bag of potatoes was leak a liquid that be dark brown, approaching color of feces. Also, it was the foulest smellest substance ever. It be stinkier than meat gone bad, vomit, and any other heartless odor you can think of. I tossed the potatoes within the trash, but the mysterious substance was stuck to the bottom of the cupboard. I manage to scrub most of it away using a sponge and baking soda, although to this day, a bit bit of the brown stuff still remains inside the cupboard. To this day, I wonder why a shoulder bag of potatoes would ooze brown liquid. Did the rucksack become moldy? Or is this what happens when potatoes become rotten?
