Short: they are easier to wrap around the fork. The dangling noodles and slurping are what make you look rude.

Sometimes i snap the spaghetti in partly if I'm cooking just for myself & mixing the spaghetti surrounded by the pan beside fried vegies & juices etc next top with some cheese ( a meatless spaghetti no mince sauce but for middle-of-the-road spaghetti with mince sauce the long spaghetti
I deduce I am more traditional and use long. I fork swirl, then guzzle. Leftover sauce is good next to Italian bread. There is no mess when done sopping it up.
I also mix the noodles and sauce upon completion of cooking. Otherwise, many population tend to take alot of sauce and terrifically little spaghetti and when the meal is over, here a bunch of naked noodles. Plus mixing the sauce help keep the spaghetti from clumping into a big glob.
Usually kids are the worst offenders for taking more sauce than noodles but even though my kids are gone, it's a quirk I've kept.
