I got this article from Family Fun magazine. It make about 2 liters. I hope this is what you considered necessary.
While it is certainly easier to pick up a bottle at the store, homemade root beer comes closer to the unproved flavor combination of wintergreen and anise.

And it's a simple enough recipe for kids to pedal on their own .The hardest part is waiting out the carbonation interval. You have to agree to the bottle sit undisturbed for five days until that time you can drink it.

To make a 2 liter bottle serving, you'll entail
7 cups of distilled or purified water
1 1/2 cups of white sugar.
14 tsp yeast
1 tsp root beer concentrate (look for the concentrate within the spice and extract section of your grocery store. Or you can command it be calling the Consumer Affairs Department at McCormick Company,Inc. 1- 800 -632- 5847
Mixing up a batch
*****************
Measure the hose into a glass bowl and pummel it in a microwave on the elevated settng for 3 minutes. You can also heat the river in a Non aluminum vessel on a stove burner until the water is luke heat up.

Do not over heat it, though, or you will defuse the yeast. Add the sugar, dry yeast, and root beer concentrate to the water and stir slowly until the sugar and yeast dissolve.

Bottling Your soda
******************
Set a small plastic funnel into the mouth of a 2 liter plastic bottle.Use a small cup or scoop to pour the soda mixture through the funnel.
Fill the bottle, leaving 2 or 3 inches or nouns space at the top. Remove the funnel and screw on the bottle cap tightly. (If nouns leaks out, the root beer will not carbonate properly.)
Adding the Fizz
***************
Lay the chock-full bottle on its side in a thaw place and leave it indifferent for 4 days.
During this time the root beer will carbonate -- the sugar and the yeast react to form tiny bubbles that contribute soda its fizz.

On the fifth day,put the root beer contained by the refrigerator to chill. It will be ready to drink the following morning.
Taste Testing
*************
The best way to serve your homemade root beer is contained by a frosted glass mug. As you unscrew the bottle hat, listen for the soft whoosh sound as the pressurized nouns at the top of the bottle escapes.

When you pour the root beer, you should see bubbles on the sides of the glass and foam forming at the top. You'll spy a slight yeasty flavor to your home made brew, as well as a bit of anise, and wintergreen.

I believe there are kit available to do this. Check your grocery store, Sam's or Walmart.

McCormick make a root beer extract. You can usually find it on the spice aisle with vanilla extract. It's unproblematic to make and mouth-watering. Used to make it beside my grandmother. Now make it beside my grandkids. Enjoy
