As an Indian, Monsoon is the best (http://www.monsoonrestaurant.com/html/home.html)
Bombay in Hillcrest is also completely good.
Both are owned by one and the same people.

Mmmm, some of my two favorite things - Indian food and Downtown!
I'm a born and raise San Diego girl, so here's a few of my recommendations:
Monsoon:
4th Avenue
Pretty pricey, but soooo worth it
Fine dining
Masala:
5th Avenue
Really expensive, but also worth it
Lunch & dinner
Amarin:
This is somewhere within Hillcrest, I can't really remember
SO inexpensive, and in my belief - better than the really pricey ones!!
They have amazing curry lunch specials - for nearly $8 you get a salad, bread, any description of curry you want w/either meat, lamb, chicken, or veggies, and rice.
Hope that helps!
