They are not mexican, however they are from the north/central zone of south america (Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, etc.) they originated during colony, and after they expanded throu all south america.

A polite authentic mexican dessert would be...Suspiros, africanos, chimbos, caballito, turulete, hojaldra, nuégados, coyol con dulce, pucsinú, empanizado de cacahuate, bolona, pepita con dulce, calabaza, cazueleja de elote, dulces de yema and cupapé.

I haven't even tried half of those desserts, however suspiros are intensely good and assured to make.

My experience? Im Latino (de Venezuela!) and know some much something like south american cuisine.

Well, they are eaten within Mexico, but they are originally from Spain. The Spaniards brought them over to Mexico and other Latin American countries. They are eaten surrounded by both countries, so I would make them if I be you. You're making me hungry by the way...LOL.
