The only supermarket I can take to does not carry it, and there's no Asian grocery implicit me. I know that it is a vital ingredient contained by Vietnamese cooking, but I'm out of luck. I realize it won't be authentic, but is there anything at adjectives I could substitute with standard results??

If your grocery store has a Thai sector, you can substitute NAM PLA. Otherwise combine soy & oyster sauces.
Use any fish sauce, or oyster sauce. Most Large grocery stores will hold an asian section that have some form of fish sauce. It may be a specialty flavor but in a pinch the air fish flavor is what your looking for.
You could join soy sauce to a really condensed fish broth. some places sell granulated fish broth but they also probably trade fish sauce. Really, I would suggest that you purchase some over the internet.
