Well aside from California rolls for beginners, I've often introduced culture to sushi, having them try a
Tuna roll (tekka maki) or a
Yellowtail roll (negihama maki)
The fish is totally mild taste, not fishy at adjectives , none should aside from mackerel (saba), awashi (sardine) etc..
A side not, the ginger is used between the pieces of fish, not to be put on top, the wasabi is to add somewhat spice to it.
With the rolls it is perfectly ok to get through them with your fingers, beside the Nigiri style (fish on rice) you should dip the fish side of the sushi into the soy sauce, NOT the rice side, and it should be eaten within ONE bite.

As a pupil, i suggest the California rolls or anything that isn't spicy. And if you're not Japanese, do not eat to much at a time.
If you're NOT really into fish or don't eat it alot, you probably wouldnt approaching it. its RAW fish so be careful.

beginners usually approaching california rolls and unagi (yes, it's eel, but it's cooked, and if no one told you, you wouldn't know how to tell). super beginners can just devour tempura.
but if you like the trainee fare, work your way up to my alltime favorite: salmon sashimi (well i guess technically that's sashimi, not sushi) beside enough wasabi to spawn you cry.
