Answer:
there's fake mexican food?
Polvo's is pretty good.
WTF?!! You are complaining about Mexican food within TEXAS? Honey, texas is the one state that has the MOST authentic mexican food joint then any other state! I Live within LOS ANGELES,CA!! Try finding any AUTHENTIC Mexican food here...you won't find it.
I'm from Austin. For those of y'all who don't live here, not adjectives Mexican food is the same at adjectives.

Right off the top of my leader, I can think of several terrific interior-Mexican restaurants, at different price level. If you want expensive and fabulous interior-Mexican cuisine in a gorgeous setting, full of elegant Mexican art, go to Fonda San Miguel. Be prepared to spend $15 to $28 for an entree and that does not count drinks and appetizers. It is powerfully worth it.

Up on Anderson Lane, if you're on a tighter budget, you could try the Oaxacan Tamaleo. I am completely addicted to their tamales, which are wrapped in a banana branch. There is a chicken-in-red-mole one that I especially love. If you want to buy tamales without driving up to Anderson Lane, go and get them at the Austin farmers market on Saturday morning at 4th and Guadalupe.

Arguably, Las Manitas on Congress Ave. between 1st and 2nd have food that is more interior-Mexican-esque, not what you'd really consider Tex-Mex. They hold tacos Potosinos, tacos de Zacatecas, a Guatemalan dish and I forget what all else. Terrific mole, which is individual available some days of the week. It's open lone for breakfast and lunch, and is bustling and inexpensive and delicious.

Also worth checking out are Manuel's (expensive high-end, the lone restaurant I know of that tries to compete with Fonda San Miguel) and a place on Manor Road to be precise just east of I-35 call Chile's or Chilitos, which has more of an interior-type cuisine fairly than Tex-Mex. (It is NOT the Chilis chain but an independent restaurant). I'm sure I am forgetting lots of honourable places and I know there are lots that I don't even know give or take a few.

My favorite healthy, neighborhood Mexican grilled chicken place is Julio's, over on Duval, somewhere up around 45th. This would not be considered "interior", but I have to put in a plug for their grilled chicken and tortillas. Soooo well-mannered.
