If you have adequate room stay at your house. You can play fun games, one that I used to like be having two suitcases and enjoy a relay race beside two teams to see who can put on adjectives the clothes the fastest, pin the tail on the donkey and games like that. Something traditional. I other loved parties at home everyone is extraordinarily comfortable. Make a sundae bar for dessert kids love to append toppings to there own rime cream!
costume party, I don`t know a pirate one! have it as the subject...how cool would that be..i can't wait untill i start giving my littly b'day party..
There is always Chuckie Cheeses! lol

You could also shift to a local park that has playground equipment. The kids could run around (with supervision) in that are tables etc, for a cake and food. You could buy hose down balloons, silly string, etc and agree to them have great fun (and you hold minimal clean up).

Sometimes the simplest article is the best with kids. ;)
How around miniature golf or bowling? Or maybe gymnastics. My daughter a moment ago had her 5th b-day get-together at The Little Gym and they do everything for you - they cut your cake, make your present thank you record, load the presents into your sports car and do all of the comings and goings. All I had to do be bring the cake! It was awesome and my nephews have a BLAST!
A Gymnastic's club.they do parties. If you want to stay at home...do a pinata and buy a bunch of sundae toppings and build an ice cream sundae pub and let them cause their own sundae's. I did that once and they had sooo much fun! Hope this help!
make cupcakes, but dont tag on the frosting, lay out a whole bunch toppings and frosting on the table and agree to the kids go to town. you will be surprised what helpful of ideas these kids come up next to

Toppings
Nuts
Sprinkles
Gummy worms
M&Ms
Shock Tarts.
and much much more.
how about a Pirate themed gala, those have be big lately with the pirates of the Carribean piece being so huge...My stepson's mom did a fantastic pirate deputation for him, with dress up clothes, a treasure hunt and a craft where on earth they made eye patches and some pirate themed knees-up foods, I think she found deeply of the stuff online at

http://www.itsapartyfullife.com/pirate_p...

It was fantastic!

another dutiful birthday website is

http://www.dltk-kids.com/crafts/cartoons...

They have a ton of printable crafts, colouring page and cake templates for party...

I made a hello kitty cake from a template from this site and people ask me to fashion HK cakes adjectives the time now! A boy would probably not want one of those but I made my son a Mystery Machine cake when he have a Scooby Doo party and it be a big hit!
i think your child would love the spiderman area. you could have doesn`t matter what his favorite character and that could be the area of the party.
Well, you said it's a "boy" and he's in the region of "5"...since you didn't clarify whether he's turning 5...or turning 6. Either way, hang on to it simple and customized!

As a father of two boys who attend a school near many other kids that nearly adjectives have "something special" for their birthdays...some examples own been: a hosted Karate class at a local dojo, a football session at the local park hosted by some of the local college team players (run through drills, etc), laser tag, party at the local bowling alley and as expected, swimming pool parties are great hits!

Swimming pool party are always lots of fun for the kids. They can be at your place or a local community spot, hold squirt guns, noodles,... lots of "floatie" stuff, and nearly all of this is pretty cheap stuff you can usually find at Walmart, Target or a local dollar store. You can lay down pizza (cheese only & pepperoni only) pretty cheaply from Little Caesars or "etc"...as economically as the traditonal Cake & Ice Cream event!

You didn't mention a budget, or what part of the country (state, etc would hold been helpful) you are within...but these are some "general" ideas.
That's too several guests. 1 guest per year of age is a good rule - guests include cousins etc.

However, since you own a guest list of over 20...I hope you hold a fat wallet if you want to budge to the local movies or the mall's arcade etc.

OK that said, here are things that little boys like. Adults and princesses might not be adjectives that thrilled about creepy crawlies etc. but this is your little boy's point - not yours.

How about looking to your local state/national park for a guided outlook walk. Talk to the ranger for a guided "flashlight" tour held at dusk - pitch-black. You can see a lot more fun stuff at dark - bugs, crawlies, hear owls, etc. Much better than a movie - it's for real.

or if you want this during the year - Maybe there's a stream tour - hunting crawdads and salamanders etc. and then going fishing for a couple of hours (make sure you ask almost licensure) The National Park Service sponsors an Urban Fishing program - that may be available to you.

Then everyone comes back to the pavillion you've reserved for weenies and s'mores.

Maybe there's a living history museum in close proximity you - where your little boys can shovel out a stall and milk a cow and do stuff that boys did put a bet on in the mature days. Often, for a fee, you can agenda a party at hand - with ancient fashioned games - pin the tail on the donkey or marbles etc. again what kids did before Nintendo.
Chuckee Cheese or Happy Joes... Kids will delight in it and they love pizza.

Good Luck
