I am trying to come up with a menu for my Mom and Aunt's birthday get-together. It is a 50's theme. The solitary thing that I enjoy come up with is Hamburgers. Any philosophy?

Pizza.
In the 50's the introduction of Italian-style pizzas lead to the Americanization and popularization of the delicious meat and veggie pie. It be before Pizza Hut and Dominoes took over. Most pizzas be eaten within cafes, but in that was also the introduction of box pizza kit which contained all the makings for you to product your own.
Before the '50's pizza was virtually unknown outside of the Italian community. Your pizza if you did draw from one was imagined to include anchovies as well as adjectives the other stuff we have come to know and love.

I found Ice Box Cake...
Title: Bristol Ice Box Cake
Categories: Desserts, Pineapple, Easy, Cakes, Icebox
Yield: 8 Servings
1/4 c Butter, melted
2 c Crushed pineapple, drained
1/2 c Sugar
1/2 c Pecans, chopped
3 c Vanilla cracker crumbs
1/2 pt Heavy cream, whipped
Mix first 4 ingredients. Line a 1 quart dish next to a layer of crumbs, next a layer of mixture. Repeat the process, finish with crumbs. Refrigerate 3-4 hours or overnight.
To serve, frills with whip cream. Could substitute CoolWhip if desired.
remember in the 50's in that were alot of items that come out of boxes and in the commercials frequent women were holding casserols. Also alot of picnics so potato salads, mash potatos, green bean casseroles, Sloppy Joes, cookies were big time surrounded by those days like peanut putter cookies next to the indentations and chocolate chip cookies, coffe cakes, pineapple upside down cake, ambrosia. OH AND POP CORN! Marshmallow Squares, you could stir with TV dinners!
Martinis, Manhattans, Gimlets, Gibsons as drinks, Tom Collins, remember they other had a drink contained by their hands!! Oh and a cigarette contained by the other. You can decorate next to cigarettes and hoola hoops as well.
