my mom is 49 and she said if you dont want to dress up as a greaser than dress up as a weed w/ the tape around the eyeglasses flooded pants ect., ect.economically i hope you can use this info!!11 =}
Most guys will probably do the levis, white t-shirt and leather jacket thing. You could do a dress up bit, near a double breates suit and wide tie. Suits adjectives had wide open lapels after and were any double breasted or two button. Bowling shirts were popular as economically and anybody who did not wear jeans, usually 501 Levis, wore slacks. You need pleated ones, adjectives the way up to the waistline. Penny loafers be big too and have come final into style
the greaser look would probly be the most obvious choice,also undemanding to dress for,(tight jeans,leather jacket and boots,comb,hair gel,black sunglasses etc) the lone other things i could think of be like a classy 50"s bussiness man near the geeky black square glasses and briefcase or I don`t know like a malt shop server boy near the little apron uniform and little paper hood, or like a gas station boy..the individual things i could think of really..oh and as you would expect the elvis presley inspired look..!lol or like a classic dude at the bowling nouns with the 50"s bowling uniform and shoes etc.. lately think of fonzie from "contented days" lol... check google pictures also.have fun!
I guess people are going to be markedly obvious in the region of this one. 1950=greaser or poodle skirt. So predictable...everyone will be dressed the same.
I suggest you don't be so direct. First, exclude the 50's cut and focus on costumes you might get for an commonplace costume party.
People commonly dress as a police officer, so what did a police uniform look approaching back afterwards? http://home.comcast.net/~mmrubino/motorc...
or sports costumes are always polite too. What about 50's sports uniform? http://cache.eb.com/eb/image?id=91823&re... or http://www.railfanreading.com/rinker3.jp...

how about a milkman? intensely old skool, right? http://www.eviltwinltd.com/muppetlabs/oc...
Have a goofy veined jacket, bow tie, and glasses? Be a H.S. prom King (make a "1950's Prom King" sash)

James Bond is an natural costume (get a gun) He just come out during the fifties.
A school boy (make a leather book strap) or a Doo wop singer (get an aged mic) either would work next to a letter sweater.

Hope you can use some of these thinking. The point is, don't try to necessarily think 50's. Think of what you want to dress as, and find out the 50's journal. Get it?
Good luck. You'll look great as long as you try to think a moment or two outside the box. Be creative...Don't show up looking just resembling everyone else.
How about dressing approaching a beat-nick? That's very 50's. Black turtleneck, beret and goatee. Snap your fingers and verbs "Howl".
Or how about Clark Kent?
Or Richie Cunningham? Chinos and a short sleeved plaid button down shirt, letterman sweater, and penny loafers?
Or if you really want to be the sermon of the party, you could dress up approaching June Cleaver. Better yet, find a female to dress up like Dorris Day and you could dress up resembling Rock Hudson.
The college where my mom teach did this theme for their response party end year and the college president wore his football uniform. So, maybe receive a letter jacket or message sweater (v-neck sweater with near a large V - for varsity - sewn on the lower gone front corner) and wear it with a plain white T and jeans and come as the All-American Jock.
be the Letterman. You know the jock who have a letter jacket or cardigan sweater- Like Richie Cunnigham or Pottsie not Fonzie...or be Arnold the Diner cook don't know how flamboyant you want to be, but you could have a blender and mix up milkshake or smoothies for the ladies at lunch
