ideas please for music, 70's food (got chicken within a basket!),
what be the hottest thing almost 1976 apart from the weather?
Answers:
I agree with Elizabeth more or less the fondue...HUGE in the 70's...I asked my mom, as I with the sole purpose would've been roughly speaking 4 years old contained by 1976...LOL!
As for music, try to find an old, functional narrative player and some records...ABBA, Chicago, Billy Joel Turnstiles narrative, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Captain and Tennille, Some K-tel conglomeration records (Also huge surrounded by the 1970's)...keep the music subtle so as not to interfere near the atmosphere of the party...
I would also enjoy some nostalgia snacks, similar to bowls of classic 70's candies around...razzles, sweet tarts, etc...
you could brand name this cute cake, which I've included the link for

look for some 70's decorate books or home ec text books from the 1970's for inspiration, the latter will probably include recipe and other decorating design from the 1970's...
also scour yardsales for 70's type dishes in tones of gold ingots, avocado and rust...as well as the blue and white corning ware casserole dishes...huge surrounded by the 1970's...you can also probably find some really snazzy 70's style ceramic ornaments for a centerpiece, of sorts...table clothes surrounded by 70's colours often turn up at yardsales...
a crock pot full of delegation meatballs, screams 1970's...serve beside toothpicks...see if you can find a vintage crockpot at a yardsale or on eBay...I have one surrounded by harvest gold ingots, classic!
I would use flowers in tones of sickly, gold, rust etc...
1976 be the Bi-Centennial of the USA so lots of parties that year feature "Founding Fathers" themes. 1976 be also the beginning of the Disco era and lots and lots of roller skating. Bay City Rollers be popular but I don't know if you'll find much from the band. The movie Car Wash be very popular because of the music as much as the actor in it. Barry Manilow sing "I Write the Songs" and was markedly popular, too. Here's an addy for a good index of the songs that year:

As for fashion - bell bottoms for both guys and girls (since those lingo were still ok then), vests, bead, beards on men and Farah Fawcett coat on women (that meant layered, curly and long if you've never see her back then) and the mini skirt be still in rage, too.
Fondue Pots were the item that year, too. Not much in the passageway of "new" foods. The microwave wasn't around then so if you needed to "party" then it be fast food brought contained by - frequently pizza and drinks. Seven layered salad was popular and here's a recipe for it:

Hope you hold a fun party.
