We are having a barbecue that everybody brings dishes. I would close to to identify the food for my guests.
Answer:
Take little 3 by 5 inch cards, fold them in partly to make little "tents" and write on one side near the name of the dish and the chef.
What is the question?
Flank steak, chicken, sausage, ribs. corn on the cob zucchini on the bbq is good, bell pepper, pineapple & onions. pasta salad, 3 bean salad, spaghetti salad. ambrosia, watergate, & fresh fruit salads can also be considered as a dessert.
so first, i am totally learned on this matter.. ok, so you take some paper, and you obtain a pen.. and you have those in position in your foot as the guests and their food come in.. you emergency to know what the unknown substance is and as best you can you write it on the paper that you have in your appendage.. and Vouila! you put the corresponding signs next to the corresponding mush!!
Get blank laminated cards. Have the people write what the dish is on it next to a Sharpy pen. You could use the kind of stands that are used for holding place settings cards.
take a small piece of quality newspaper and fold it in partly like this;
http://www.crane.com/content/prodimages/...
write identify of the food on it and place it in front of the food.
Create some Table tent cards - Use pictures to identify if it's a appetizer, meat dish, dessert, etc. Leave a blank area on respectively one to write in the entitle of the dish as each guest hand it to you on arrival. This will be a great ice breaker for anyone coming that you may not already know. Have Fun!
Print them yourself on paper or postcards that you can draw from at Office Max or Staples.
Get some construction treatise at the dollar store and cut it into recatngles. Fold them in partly lengthwise and... Your own little place cards. Now for the writing, I would use a marker so not a soul has to strain their eyes within the sunlight. It's a barbeque, so you don't need to use calligraphy, merely print as nice and clear as you can!! Good luck and have a wonderful time!
Get your guests to bring a card identifying the food - nickname, whether it is meat/fish/veg and whether it contains milk or nuts for those who have allergies.
Go to the Dollar Store adn buy little 3"x4" or 3"x5" photo frames. Put the same quality newspaper inside. Then write on teh glass w/ a Sharpie pen (or on the daily, whatever) what your dish is. Remove the permanent Sharpie ink w/ rubbing alcohol, and keep hold of for your next participant.
Great concept here - why not take it a step further? Ask guests to bring the recipe for their dish and after the event is over, type the recipes up and distribute everyone a booklet of said recipes. What a nice contribution. (of course this would not be done until a week or so later)
Have fun!
I brand my own cards using those black paper clips..the sturdy variety that are a black plastic "wedge" with the wine tong thingys? Use a sign to write the labels on cardstock or index cards contained by the color of your theme. Then put respectively card in the black broadsheet clip, with the flat bottom of the clips on the table. (I yearning I could think of what they are in fact called, it's driving me crazy! :) The clip will hold the card contained by an upright position for confident reading. They are great! Plus, you won't be heartbroken if you lose one.
That's frightening if you have food not a soul can identify. Just kidding, lol. What you can dance is, go to a stationery store, seize the little label cards for place settings (they come contained by packs for the printer, simply like business or greeting cards do). You can even find different styles. Create the word document from the "tool" deity at the top of your window, select post and mailings, it will lead you to envelopes and label. There will be a number on the top of your label packet. Once you click your test, be sure you choose labels. Go to option, there will be a inventory of many sign types with their product number. Find your product number, select it. Then click exotic document. DO NOT FILL IN THE BLANK BOX - LEAVE IT BLANK. Choose "New Document", your screen will show a format of your label. Type a food item in respectively one. You can do fancy fonts and colors, if you have a color printer. If not, black lettering is purely fine. It will give a drastically strong and sleek appearance.
You probably know word better than I do. Best wishes!

I guess the idea is righteous dear heart but I think family will choose whatever looks righteous to them according to their taste. Presentation is big, or if there are ancestors who are allergic to some of the food.
Use clothespins - attach to the perimeter of the serving dish. Use tape to attach a piece of index card beside the name of the dish, approaching: "Veggie Lasagna" or "Red Hot Chili Con Carne" Re-useable!
