I've decided to throw a black tie do for ancestors at work. I've hired a bar and dj/karaoke and will be making food to hold costs down but I need some upright party planning to make it something attractive whilst keeping people's clothes on!! Gonna have a games corner beside chess etc for those that want to pretend to be intellectual, but would like something else to catch everyone going after a few drinks.
Probably 20-30 people.
Any thinking?

For a Black Tie darkness I would set up a little Casino dark. Get a small roulette wheel, Poker Table, Black Jack, and I don`t know Craps. People like those and they move about really well next to the Black tie thing. Maybe tie your menu contained by and make it close to a Monte Carlo night .
I hold been to a couple of party that sound close to what you are trying and raynelle's idea of a casino have worked well at both of them. Depending on where on earth in the country you are you can capture people to do this for you (organise, provide wheel, table covers, croupiers (sober!) etc). It is a good notion to issue people next to 'monopoly' money or chips as part of the accord and then extend small prizes for the winners beside the highest kitty fairly than embarassing people by asking them to verbs in their wallet on the night. And everyone starts beside the same number of chips. If you are sitting down to drink then you might consider a performer working the tables during coffee. Have fun.
A black tie do imply it's gonna be quite sophisticated. Have a area; for instance a James Bond; Casino type thing; your'e already sector way in attendance with your games corner !
What more or less Horse Racing? I'm sure it's not too difficult to hire the films and all the indispensable equipment that goes next to it. You could use Monopoly money for betting. Whoever wins the most, win a small prize, say a bottle of wine/champers.
