How do you variety a chocolate cake?

I'm trying to make a chocolate cake for my little sisters birthday on Monday and be hoping to be able to generate a square cake with chocolate frosting on the outside. I'm with the sole purpose 13 so a simple recipe would be much appriciated and I have cake tins 8"x 8"x 3", 10.5"x 10.5"x 3" and 12"x 12"x 2". Please facilitate.

Hope For More Chocolate Cake
1 1/4 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
6 tablespoons cocoa
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup boiling water

Combine the flour,baking soda and cocoa. Sift the mixture. In a separate bowl cream the sugar,and cream and shortening until pale. Add the eggs,one at a time and beat for 2 minutes after respectively one.Add the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk,hammering at medium speed after respectively addition. Add the vanilla.Add the hose down,1/3 at a time,beating powerfully after each addendum. Pour the batter into 2 ungreased 8-inch cake pans. Bake within a 350 degree oven for 20-25 minutes.
