Why do family smell the wine beforehand consumption?

Answer:
When you swirl the wine in the cup and smell it before you sip it's to back you take contained by all of the flavors better. I don't know if you've have the pleasure of taking in the full flavor of a really worthy wine like that, but if you ever do you'll know why it's done.
And you don't sniff the cork. When the cork is hand to you you're looking to see if it's dry because it was stored incorrectly or if the wine have soaked through all the path and been exposed to oxygen.
Sense of smell and taste are associated. Wines have different taste and therefore different aromas. It's another path to fully appreciate the wine and its flavor.
